PC Utilities review:
Windows XP Media Center Edition is a special version of Microsoft's OS, designed to offer users with suitably equipped PCs the opportunity to access all their media files from one location. As great as the specialised OS is, it's only available preinstalled on selected PCs, so users hoping to create their own home media centre will need to look elsewhere for an all-in-one software package. J. River Media Center 11 is just such a program, offering everything users need to play audio and video files, browse digital photos and connect to a range of home entertainment devices.
The program can turn your desktop PC into a complete entertainment centre, and is controlled from a clear, attractive display. You can use J. River Media Center to acquire and manage digital photos, movies, TV and music files across numerous formats. Likewise, the program can be used to transfer material onto portable devices, enabling you to encode and convert across all popular media types. You can even use it to control a TV-tuner card or TiVo, and all of the program's functions can be accessed from the comfort of your sofa using a PC remote or PDA.
As a straightforward media player, the program stands up well against the competition thanks to its wide range of features. For example, you can scan your system for media files in order to quickly build up a catalogue from which you can quickly select whatever media files you're after. The excellent file management functions are augmented by a search facility, which will enable you to find your files virtually instantly.
As you would expect from any modern media player, the program comes complete with numerous skins, so you can customise its look to meet your tastes. The main interface can also be replaced with a mini one you can slot in the corner of your screen whilst you work.
If you're looking for a powerful media player that's capable of handling pretty much anything you can throw at it, J. River Media Center comes well recommended. It may not be free but it's a lot cheaper than splashing out on a new Windows XP Media Center PC.
