PC Utilities review:
Pacemaker Editor is another tool designed with the digital DJ in mind. It’s been specifically tailored to making the process of mixing tracks on the desktop as smooth and straightforward as possible, and it achieves these asims well.
The user interface is fairly simple - there’s just one window split into several panes. This gives you more than enough space to lay out your tracks, mix songs together on the timeline, and add any effects you wish to include. The effects are quite limited - you can equalise the music, add a hi-lo cut filter, add reverb, roll, or echo, insert a loop, or reverse a portion of the track. The length and properties of these effects can be edited in real-time on the timeline whilst the mix is playing.
However, it’s the X-FADE effects option which is the most impressive. This tool matches the tempo (measured in beats per minute) of two tracks and seamlessly meshes them together. This works best with dance tracks, and the speed of the rest of the track can be readjusted to its original bpm value after the original song has ended - if you don’t readjust, the whole of the second track may sound too fast or too slow, depending on its original tempo.
Like Mixxx, Pacemaker Editor can be used for live mixing but its different approach means you don’t get quite the same options as you would when mixing with vinyl. There are advantages here though, such as a superb degree of flexibility over tempo and pitch across the length of a track. Mixes can be outputted to Ogg Vorbis format for later playback.
