PC Utilities review:
The Open Source community is full of enterprising programmers, but the software they produce can often be a little bit lacking on the usability front. Whether this is because the software is tricky to install, unintuitive to use or lacks proper documentation, it has the effect of undermining the usefulness of otherwise very handy tools.
Fortunately, there are those in the Open Source community who are keen to tie together the fruits of others' labour, producing more powerful and accessible products as a result. MediaCoder is a tool which does just this, combining a wealth of Open Source audio and video codecs and tools into a single, feature-packed whole. The result is a veritable multimedia toolkit, capable of handling virtually all your audio and video encoding and conversion needs.
The program enables you to increase audio and video file compression (reducing the file size, but at the expense of sound or picture quality), rip audio or video from CDs and DVDs, extract audio from video files, and convert files between a staggering array of different formats (including AVI, MP3, MP4, DivX, XviD, OGG, AAC, mobile phone and PSP, and countless others). As if all that wasn't enough, the program's features can be further enhanced thanks to built-in support for Extensions and Plug-ins. There are only a few plug-ins available at the moment, and these are mainly designed to show how the demonstrate how the extension architecture works, but this number is likely to grow as the tool becomes more widely used.
Being Open Source, MediaCoder is completely free to use and there are no time limits or other restrictions to worry about. However, it's still very much in development, and there are quite a few stability issues to be ironed out. By the time the application reaches its first non-beta release, it should be a very impressive tool indeed.
