PC Utilities review:

Maintaining a healthy PC requires more than installing an antivirus program and firewall and hoping for the best. In addition to tending to a PC's security needs, it's important to keep the hard disk in good working order too. This means regularly clearing out unnecessary files that may be overburdening resources, and defragmenting the hard drive to keep file access times to an absolute minimum, thereby reducing wear on the hard disk.

Auslogics Disk Defrag is a free alternative to the defragmentation tool built into Windows. The primary bonus of using this tool over Microsoft's disk maintenance application is its speed - Auslogics Disk Defrag can reintegrate your files to minimise fragmentation in a fraction of the time it take the Windows tool. Depending on the extent of fragmentation, the amount of free space available on the drive and the size of your disk, it may still take some time to complete, but you shouldn't need to leave it running overnight.

Aside from its speed, Auslogics Disk Defrag is a relatively minimalist tool with few additional features to recommend it. The program can output a detailed HTML report of exactly what files have been moved and any problems that have been encountered, but that's about it. There are no scheduling options and it's not possible to analyse a disk before performing a full defrag operation.

If you don't have an alternative to the Windows defrag tool, the speed of the Auslogics program makes it worth installing.

mikemk2010 says: The latest version of Disk Defrag, 3.1.10.165, is a further improvement on the defragmenter I have used over many years. A very clear display, options to analyse, defrag or defrag & optimise. The default settings seem optimum, and the option to defragment all drives on a PC at the same time, is a real time saver. It works quickly, and when finished, can switch off the PC. It can be set to automatically work in the background, when the PC is idle, the time delay to start defragmenting can be set between 1 minute, up to 30 minutes, which should suit most users. All round a most effective, good looking and 'hard to fault' program. (08/01/2011)
