PC Utilities review:

You may not have given the subject much thought but toddlers and PCs actually share a lot in common, most notably their uncanny ability to attract muck. Let your vigilance slip for a moment and your hard drive's will begin to brim with unnecessary files and shortcuts. Just as you wouldn't leave your children caked in jam or mud, only the most negligent of PC users fail to give their hard drives a virtual scrub every now and then. The Windows Disk Cleanup tool can help to some degree, but the application is notoriously slow and only covers a select few areas of your system. To give your system a proper scrub, you would be better served using a third-party program like BeClean.

Like its Windows equivalent, BeClean is capable of clearing out the most common areas where clutter accumulates, including the Recycle Bin and Internet Explorer's temporary file cache. Many more nooks and crannies than these are covered though - for example, the Desktop Cleaner and Start Menu Cleaner components can remove broken shortcuts from the relevant areas of Windows. The program's Registry Cleaner module can identify and remove invalid entries across numerous areas of the registry, including the Add Or Remove programs list. What's more, a backup of the registry is made before any items are removed, so you can put everything back in place if things go wrong.

Delve into BeClean's Settings menu and you'll find the program is eminently more customisable than its Windows equivalent. It's possible to configure most of the program's cleaners to limit which areas of your system are cleaner. You can even set up personalised rules to clear out selected types of files in folders of your choice.
