PC Utilities review:

Tweak Genie is a great piece of system configuration software and an excellent tool to kick off our round-up. In its 12 category headings you'll find hundreds of options for customising the way Windows works. Most of the hacks on offer apply to Windows XP systems, but there's also a substantial amount of tweaks for Windows 98/Me too, so no matter what OS you use, Tweak Genie has something to offer.

Unlike some tools, which offer deep-level options to boost system speed, Tweak Genie focuses primarily on hacks that will have a visible effect on how you use Windows. From the Start Menu section, for example, you can customise which options are available when you click the Start button, whilst the Control Panel and Applets sections enable users to restrict the options available through the Control Panel. Interface hacks are available in the Internet Explorer section, so you can set a bitmap of your choice as the background to IE's toolbars.

If you want to speed up your system or restrict user access to system tools there are options available, but these are spread throughout the program's numerous categories. For instance, the display speed of the Start menu can be tweaked from the Start Menu tab, and you'll need to go to the Explorer tab to force Windows to unload DLLs in order to free up memory more quickly. Thankfully, most security-related options can be found in one location - under the Security heading.

Although distributed as freeware, some of the options listed in the program's interface are disabled by default. In order to access these options, you'll need to register the program for £11.16 - to upgrade, select Options/ Purchase Tweak Genie.
