Q: I subscribe to PC Utilities digital edition and I’m trying to load AVG Version 9 (Mag issue 121) from your website. The estimated time to download was approx 61/2 Hours, due to being on dial-up I suppose. After about 6 Hours my ISP put a message on my screen, saying “Unable to Download Program”. I rang my ISP and they said the program was too big now (I have loaded previous versions with no problems).
What are my options? Broadband – I believe would be too expensive at NZ$40 per month, as I pay NZ$9 a month on dial-up for 30 hours of use. Buy the program, but if the bought program relies on downloading from AVG into my computer it would still be too large. Would a Program like Ares Galaxy FasterDownloader to Speed up the download process and resume interrupted downloads and more. I found this program in issue14 of the old PC Utilities Plus +. My ISP suggested I find someone with Broadband to Download the program and transfer it on to a disc or USB stick, and then onto my computer. I do know someone with Broadband, but don’t know how to transfer the installed program.
Are there any other options? Or can you help with the last option above?
A: Whilst a download manager program optimises your use of bandwidth to speed up downloads, it’s unlikely to help here since it seems that your ISP is capping the size of files you can download.
The easiest option is to get your friend to download the file via broadband and copy it to a USB drive or burn it to a CD. You then simply insert the disc or connect the drive to your PC, drag the program file onto your hard disc and install it from there. A further option would be to buy a print copy of the magazine so that you can install the software from the cover disc.
If you want to be able to download an antivirus solution yourself you could switch to another product such as Avira Antivir which is around half the file size of AVG.

I subscribe to the PC Utilities digital edition, as I am in Australia, and cannot download the coverdisc iso files from the “Featured Programs” web page. A short time (approximately 10 minutes) after the download is started I receive an error message that Internet Explorer has timed out. I have subsequently increased the “Keep Alive Timeout” and “Server Info Timeout” settings in Internet Explorer from 1 and 2 minutes respectively to 30 minutes, but the timeout error persists. When attempting to download these iso files the download speed is reported as 90kB/sec which is apallingly slow for my cable broadband connection. I regularly obtain download speeds in excess of 1MB/sec from other sites in the UK and the US – why is downloading from your site so slow?
Hi David,
One or two people have reported this and we’re looking into it, though so far we’ve been unable to replicate the problem.
