Q: Last year you solved my problem regarding the keyboard language changing after reinstalling Windows XP. I have now come up with a similar issue after buying a laptop. However, when following your original instructions there is only a single option – English US. The keyboard has the correct UK layout. The machine came with all of the software pre-installed and there is no Windows DVD. Is there any way you can assist me in getting Windows to recognise the UK keyboard?
A: In Vista the Regional and Language settings work slightly differently from the way that they do in XP. Open up Control Panel and select Regional and Language Options, click on the Keyboards and Languages tab, then click the Change Keyboards button, this opens the Text Services and Input Languages dialogue. Under the Installed services heading in the lower part of the window click the Add button. You can now choose an additional language. Once you’ve done this you can select it as the default input language at the top of the screen. Click Close to return to Regional and Language Options and make sure you’ve selected United Kingdom on the Location tab and English (United Kingdom) on the Formats tab.
