Convert VHS Tapes to DVD

The VHS video format rose to dominance in the 1980s and VHS players soon became a familiar sight in households around the world. The improved image quality, dependability and more compact size of DVD discs dealt the VHS format a fatal blow though, and the VHS players that were once so pervasive are now more likely to be gathering dust in attics rather than holding pride of place in the living room.

The march of progress continues ever onwards, and it’s now the high definition Blu-ray Disc format that’s vying for a place alongside your home TV. There are fewer compelling reasons to upgrade to Blu-ray than there were for DVD though, and the new format is thankfully backwards compatible with DVD – all of which suggests there’s still plenty of life left in DVDs yet.

Those long years of owning a VHS recorder – and potentially a video camera, which recorded to a tape-based format – may have left you with a sizable collection of VHS tapes. Needless to say, these won’t work with a DVD or Blu-ray player. In the case of commercially-bought tapes you may be able to buy replacements in the newer formats. The same can’t be said for all your irreplaceable home movies though, which run the risk of becoming obsolete and unplayable.

There’s no need to let those precious memories fade away though – with the right hardware and software at your disposal you can record VHS tapes to a digital format on your PC and copy them onto DVD discs for future enjoyment.
